Announced Republican candidate for the 11th Congressional seat, Carl Mumpower, has challenged Congressman Shuler’s Tuesday vote to not hold debate on earmarks hidden in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Bill. Stressing that this was not a personal attack on Congressman Shuler, Mumpower nonetheless highlighted his belief that there should be a match between what an elected official says and does. “Supporting hidden earmarks, blocking discussion, and accommodating Speaker Pelosi’s turn from earlier promises to clean up Washington politics are not representations of real mountain values”, shared Mumpower. “It’s just business as usual for a Congress that has Democrats and Republicans alike succumbing to the temptations of power politics over principled leadership.” Mumpower is the single conservative member serving on Asheville’s City Council.
